What an incredible four days of delving DEEP into equine craniosacral with @tommayes_iet IET CST course, taught by the amazing @nova_equine_renovations and Bonnie Bemboom. When I signed up, I thought it would be a refresher on craniosacral. Little did I know I would be diving deep into not only craniosacral but also how to release nerves, organs, and the emotions that live in the viscera. This course added to the library of my hands on such a deep level. I have a whole new concept of “feel” and I cannot wait to further get acquainted with the feel of each organ, bone, nerve, and chakra of each individual horse, and how to work with the body on a MUCH deeper level. I attended my first whole horse dissection this past weekend, which was offered by the wonderful Lorre Mueller of @trinityequineservicesllc and hosted by Anna Schueler of Pure Body Balance. It is hard to put into words how much I learned about the equine body and how it is all connected, but here is a quick summary of my "aha moments": 1. The body is such a delicate, refined, yet strong structure. I could not believe how delicate looking but STRONG the fascia was. 2. Because of these fascial connections, the whole body is so intricately connected. We were moving the hind leg and felt that movement all the way up in the hyoid/head. When we put a bit in the horse's mouth and put the neck into hyperflexion, the hind leg barely moved. 3. We should not isolate the body into parts when looking at it, diagnosing, or working on it. There is no isolation in the body because of how everything is so connected. For example, we should not be just focusing on the thoracic sling and not addressing the rib cage and hind end in conjunction. The thoracic sling is not what allows true collection and freedom of movement. It is actually the compression of the joints in the hind end in conjunction with the back muscles/rib cage area that anchors the body to allow the thoracic sling to be able to elevate. 4. The bracheoplexus nerve bundle cannot be pinched. This blew my mind! It is so protected by fat and muscles that it is physically impossible for this to be pinched. What is actually being compromised are the branches of nerves feeding into that nerve bundle from higher up in the neck or lower down in the sternum. 5. I know we all know that the scapula is held on by fascia and muscles. But to see it in person really drove home the fact of just how little is really holding the scapulas to the trunk of the horse. It really made me question why we are taught to dig under the scapula to release tension. This can really damage the structures that are holding the leg to the trunk. I HIGHLY recommend that anyone in the equine industry consider going to one of these dissections. It is invaluable learning. #valkyrieequinebodywork #biodynamicintegrationandrebalancing

Connection. This is what my work is about. Amora is a beautiful, smart girl who told her mom Stefanie that she wanted another session with me. I was happy to oblige. Not only did she have a wonderful session but I was able to capture this moment between Amora and her mom once her session was done. Amora put her muzzle on Stefanie’s chest for a full minute, expressing her deep gratitude for listening to her needs and making sure they are met. THIS is why I do what I do. To help horse owners build this beautiful connection and communication with their horse partners. To feel deeply and wholly on a different level with their horse. To witness horses and owners and meet them where they are. Allowing the beautiful healing capacity of the body to unwind. It truly brings tears to my eyes. Deepening my knowledge also includes learning more about how the horse’s body should move under saddle. I cannot recommend this book enough! Everyone would benefit from reading this book, not just riders/trainers. Dr. Heuschmann did a fantastic job of breaking down the biomechanics of riding into an easy to read and digest book. What he talked about makes a lot of sense and he really emphasizes that we have to focus on the whole horse, not just one part.
